Learning Outcome 2 - Present a select body of photographic work

Above is my select body of photographic work. This series of six images has been taken from Assignment two - 'Collecting'. It feels like such a long time ago that I took these shots and well really it was. I shot this series one early morning in April 2019 and its interesting to see how my style and technique has developed since then but still with this assignment embedded within the foundations of my photography.

The learning outcome suggestions state to select 4-6 images from your best assignment. Assignment two has always stuck in my mind and has been one of my favourites throughout this unit and my tutor responded well to it. The reasons behind me choosing this particular body of work are many but mainly that I feel that I started to discover my own style and way of photographing through this assignment. It opened my eyes and mind at how I look at the world and I started to look differently from this moment on.

This style of close up photography allows the framing to capture details that we might miss in general life. A reflection formed in a tiny pool of water, grey paint that has turned to rust or fine textures. There is so much more to these images than just pictures of old artillery guns.

To say I struck luck with the time I chose to shoot this series is an understatement. During the night it had rained which had left small puddles on the guns which allowed me to play around with depth of field and reflections. The sun was just starting to come out from behind the grey clouds which created a perfect natural light with some subtle but interesting shadows and also echoed the grey colours of the guns.

I also really discovered the advantages to depth of field and a wide aperture with this assignment. Because of the close up and abstract style I had chosen to use I could pin point an area I wanted to be the focus of the frame and draw the viewers eye to it with using a shallow depth of field.

There are many reasons technically why these photos work well but if you strip all of that back and just look at the series I believe that they are very pleasing to the eye. They sit well together and compliment each other and this is because of the colours used. There are four main colours captured within the series; grey, green, blue and black. The grey, blue and black are subtle with a pop of green every so often.
